Friends of the Cat Appeal

Dismiss the myth that Friends of the Cat (FOTC) has unlimited funds

We will never threaten to stop caring for cats, in order to pressurise anyone into making donations.

We have always relied on the generosity of our supporters and many truly wonderful people assisted us.

We are the only ‘No kill’ organization for cats, which means that the other rescue groups all refer to us and we bear the financial costs of treating desperately neglected/abused/ill cats until their last breath.

(We only re-home cats which our vets have declared ‘healthy’).

Naturally they are kept completely comfortable and loved until our vets indicate that there is no hope and that there is the risk of pain.  Some of us will take the little patient to our vet, insist on a tranquilizing injection to ensure that no distress is felt whilst preparing/administering of that painful euthanasia.

Holding and comforting them until after the last breath.

Although our volunteers and supporters usually own and rescue other pets, we focus on cats, due to them being the most misunderstood and hated pets. Their physical and emotion needs are entirely different and complicated from other pets, hence our specializing in their rescue is expensive and demanding.  We usually receive/rescue cats who are in great need of safety and both medical and emotional treatment. Immediate treatment is the only hope of ensuring a happy and healthy cat.

The founder of FOTC (since 01/04/1991), Adele Joffe, has spent all her savings and earnings on this sacred dedication. To the point where her personal health was neglected. She has lost her vehicle and her home, with nothing forthcoming either.  The same fate has befallen most of our volunteers or they have run out of personal funds and many cannot feed themselves in order to ensure the welfare of the beloved little orphans.

The worst is that our only and official sanctuary has been tied up in a Supreme Court case for years, as there are no funds to defend our ownership of this house (or proceeds thereof only for the cats) that was donated to us purely for the welfare of cats.  We now have to refer cats to other organizations, as we simply do not have the premises to keep them for treatment until we can re-home them.

Add the fact that we are also having to fight for the exclusivity of our name…?!  And at all times we maintain our care for the cats as our ultimate priority.  It is common knowledge that vets are as expensive as dentists.  Our kind vets allow us as much discount as possible for themselves to survive, but there is always a shortfall.

It costs us enormous amounts to board our rescues until they can be homed. Never mind catfood, litter, bedding, transport, etc, etc.  Thank Heaven that the care and dedication from our volunteers is priceless… They climb trees, rescue from drains, trap alone at night and never charge a cent when nobody else will help.  Then there is the massive rescue, sterilize and relocation of hundreds of ‘unwanted’ feral cats, whilst we have nowhere to send them.

Can anyone survive under these circumstances?  We are now forced to appeal to the general public and companies to lend a hand urgently.  Please help us help those who cannot defend themselves in a country where they are so hated and abused by the masses.  Until Adele Joffe’s appeal for compulsory sterilisation of pets has been accepted by our legislators, we will all be fighting a losing battle and they will suffer more.

Bless you for taking the time to read this appeal and please pass it on to as many people as possible. If you cannot help financially, check the list of basic needs attached or simply help us inform people of our plight. Contact Adele Joffe on +2772 144 5914 or email cyntay123@gmail.com  or katz4eva@telkomsa.net or the writer of this appeal for details as to how you can best assist the cats in need.
